It was wet! It was cold! It was very muddy! And, the game was decided with two seconds on the clock in an amazing battle in the mud between archrivals Faribault and Owatonna this past week in Owatonna. Not many miles separate Faribault and Owatonna and the school have been battling for home town pride for as long as the towns have had schools. Although both schools are members of the Big Nine Conference, Owatonna has the enrolment advantage and is a 5A school while Faribault is 4A. Both squads came to the contest with similar records with a win crucial to moving up in the conference standing at the near close of the regular season. The game was close with the Falcons and the Huskies exchanging scores all night long. Field conditions were very muddy at the center and ends of the field at the start of the game. During the second half a light drizzle turned into a steady rain and the field turned into a mud pit! Conditions deteriorated and by the end of the game it was nearly impossible to read the numbers on either team's uniforms. The mud was thick and players complained on the sidelines that their feet were getting stuck, making evasion and pursuit very difficult. In the end, Faribault persisted and made their game winning touchdown with just a couple seconds on the clock. It was a huge win and a wonderful evening of old school football.
