October 22, 2013Section play began today. Absent were teams from the largest Class - 6A. They begin play this coming Friday. Let's look at some games were the lower seed defeated the higher seed in other classes. In 5A section 6 number six seed Buffalo defeated 3rd seed Willmar 43-20 in one of the very few games where the lower seeded team won. There were a number of games where there were wins by lower ranked teams, but generally they were between team in the 4th and 5th seed positions - the teams with the closest records, and as a result the most competitive opening round of section play. It took a review of all the 6A section games and most of the 5A games to find an upset. It's apparent that opening round games are nearly always won by the top seeded teams. In a way, this is a tribute to the fairness of our seeding methods. As we move more deeply into bracket play we can expect much more competitive contests, where more game are up for grabs. Should Minnesota have teams begin section play with everyone on a more even footing? Perhaps deciding on brackets with random draws for contests? Think about this and drop me a note on the MinnesotaPreps Facebook page.
