Edinas Nick Mertes picks up his first offer

Edina's Nick Mertes picked up his first Division I offer today. Mertes comes from a football family. His Grandfather played for the Gophers under Bernie Bierman back in the day.
Mertes has interest from a number of program including Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Boston College and Penn.

But it was Montana who stepped up with his first offer. Mertes was thrilled with the offer.
"We'll I called coach Delaney earlier today because he called me last night and that was the last night for calling players. We just talked about how the end of the school year was going, and then he offered. I was so in shock that at first I didn't believe him. It seems surreal right now."
"Then he put coach Gregorak on the phone and he just talked about football, my versatility, and the program. I feel extremely blessed right now. It was always my dream to be in this position."
Mertes is a team player and he credited everyone around him with helping him achieve his goals.
" I can't thank my coaches, teammates, friends, and family enough who have been along this ride with me. They've made me a better individual on and off the field. Coach Boltmann has done so much for me in this process and I can't thank him enough. He has talked to a lot of coaches for me and he was the first person I told once I received the offer."
He is focused on winning a State championship with his Edina Hornets squad this coming season.
" I look forward to picking up more interest this summer. But I am more looking forward to working with my team and brothers as we try to win a conference, section, and state title together as a team. The individual attention is great but I just can't wait to start the season off with my boys for our final season together as we strive to win a state championship."
Edina has always been a strong school for both academics and sports and Mertes represents them very well.
