March Madness Quick Fix

Minnesota high school basketball will reach its pinnacle next week when playoffs start and March Madness officially begins. To keep things rolling along Minnesota Preps is going to throw out our March Madness Quick Fix updates, which will be short game summaries that will allow you the fan to keep updated.

DeLaSalle 89 Minneapolis Patrick Henry 45

Likely bored of ravaging Tri-Metro Conference opponents (only one conference opponent has come within 20 points of the Islanders and most lose by 30 plus) DeLaSalle went outside of the conference for the second straight game hosting Patrick Henry. The result? Another beat down as the Islanders won by 54! Harvard signed Jonah Travis scored a game high 28 points while Bretson McNeal scored 18. The Islanders are now 23-3 on the year and off until playoffs begin.

Eden Prairie 72 Wayzata 51

Eden Prairie showed that the top level of the Lake Conference is two squads, EP and Hopkins. The Eagles jumped ahead of the Trojans 42-27 and never looked back. Wayzata received another strong performance from senior Eric Robertson who put up 23 points (with a coach from the Northwestern Wildcats in attendance evaluating) but his teammates only combined to make ten other field goals against the aggressive EP defense. Grant Soderberg led the Eagles with 22 points while Dylan Stewart had 11.

Hill-Murray 51 Richfield 50

The Pioneers stayed undefeated in Classic Suburban Conference play with a 51-50 win over Richfield. Their three men frontline again was the difference with Rob Daul scoring 19 points, Jim Remke producing 17, and 6-foot-9 Dave Simmet putting up ten points. Remke won the game with a free throw in the game's final half minute. Richfield was led by the 15 points of senior John Johnson. Hill-Murray is now 20-5 while Richfield dropped to 17-9 on the year. Both teams have blasted preseason prognostications and their coaches have done stellar jobs.

Hopkins 82 Edina 63

The last time the Royals and Hornets hooked up Hopkins built a big lead only to see it shrink late. They had to scramble to pick up the 87-81 victory. Last night Edina moved quicker building a seven point first half lead led by Philip DeBerg (DeBerg scored a game high 19 points). However, inspirational instruction from Coach Ken Novak Jr. quickly turned around the Hopkins mindset and they turned a seven point deficit into a ten point halftime lead. They would eventually win 82-63 led by the 18 points from junior Zach Stahl, 17 each from Minnesota signed Joe Coleman and Northern Iowa signed Marvin Singleton and 16 from Rivals 100 guard Siyani Chambers.

Marshall 87 T-M-B 71

T-M-B is a top ten class AA team but it wouldn't have mattered if they were undefeated or winless, Tuesday night against Marshall was going to be a struggle. Why? Because the Tigers sunk ten of the first 11 three-point shots and rained in 55 first half points. Six Marshall players finished with nine or more points led by the 17 points from Caleb Johnson and 15 from Shawn Tykwinski (who drained five triples). Seven different Marshall players hit three-point shots.

Robbinsdale Cooper 100 Irondale 82

The Hawks knocked down 11 three-pointers and saw five players score a big number of points as Cooper earned their 16th win of the season. Handful Pour and Terrance Averyheart each scored 24 points, Raheem Tyner scored 19, freshman Rashad Vaughan totaled 15 points, and Charles Williams, the younger brother of Gopher Rodney Williams, scored 14. It was a balanced team effort to counter Irondale super scorer Bryan Sprang who scored his average of 27 points.

Rochester Mayo 70 Rochester John Marshall 47

Mayo sophomore point guard Kevale Taylor has been on a role lately and it continued Tuesday night. Taylor produced 21 points, eight steals, and four assists as Mayo took out their long time rival by 23 points. Six-foot-8 center Michael Idso had one of his better performances in Big Nine play with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

St. Cloud Apollo 79 Sauk Rapids 49

Apollo guard Ibrahim Abukar scored his 1,000th career point last night as the Eagles crushed Sauk Rapids by 30 points. Abukar led his team with 19 points while University of Mary signed Simon Krych scored 18 points.

Stillwater 41 Cretin-Derham Hall 40

Six-foot-4 Stillwater senior Matt Hilgers only knocked down two field goals but the second of his makes was a big one. With little time remaining Hilgers drained a jumper that pushed the Ponies over .500 for the season at 13-12. Six-foot-4 sophomore Andrew Duxbury led Stillwater with 15 points while CDH received 16 points from sophomore point Cortez Tillman but no other player scored more than six. In terms of the Suburban East Conference the loss dropped the Raiders to a game behind Roseville. This Friday the Raiders of Roseville will take on the Raiders of CDH in the final match-up of the season. A month ago Roseville beat Cretin-Derham Hall 65-63 so Roseville will share the conference title or win it out right.

Virginia 66 Chisholm 50

One of Minnesota's most unknown talents is Virginia senior guard Cavan Stackpool. The 5-foot-10 lightning quick with the ball guard can rain multiple threes on teams in a hurry and he can turn a turnover into a fast break score faster than most fans can process what happened. Last night his 16 point second half surge blew open a one-point game with Chisholm giving the Blue Devils a 16-point victory.
