Moats, Waconia take out Orono

One has to believe that losing four of their first six games was not what the Waconia Wildcats had in mind when they began practice in November. Let's not beat around the bush, it was a rough start but Waconia got back on the winning track in a big way last night.
Conference opponent Orono came into Waconia undefeated and fresh off a Granite City Classic championship. They were 7-0 and taking on a 2-4 Waconia squad. Sounds like a Spartan win correct? Wrong.

Orono held a 34-30 lead at the break before Waconia stormed back to win the second half 39-17 and the game 69-51.
"Against a great team like Orono, obviously everyone has to contribute," said Wildcat coach Pat Hayes. "We had a depleted bench so each player had to step up and fortunately we were able to play good enough defense in the 2nd half to find a way to win.
"Our second half defensive focus was better, especially in defensive transition where Orono really excels. We got the ball inside and converted."
Vanderbilt signed Shelby Moats finished with 33 points and 20 rebounds while Ben Kortuem added 17 points. The Wildcats also held Orono star Jordan Smith to nine points for the game.
